Navigate Solutions were accepted from a list of Tenders to provide a brand new IT infrastructure for three local Prisons.

Isle of Wight College Offender Learning
Navigate Solutions proudly won the Tender for a new project to provide a brand new IT infrastructure solution to the Isle of Wight Prison Education department. The solution had to encompass ease of use for staff and inmates, provide network access to a remote classroom, whilst maintaining the highest level of security. The solution must take into account offender learning structure and deliver an environment to allow inmates to excel and gain “real world” experience within a protected and monitored network
Objectives
- Support IT equipment in the prisons’ education departments
- Provide the level of support needed to achieve final implementation of existing equipment
- Effectively deliver and support the Moodle open source, course management system
- Report back on a weekly and monthly basis, to give management information
- Engage with management to design and restructure network architecture where necessary
- Suggest IT solutions that will improve delivery of programmes to inmates
- Suggest IT solutions that will improve delivery of programmes by members of staff
- To assist in any IT consultancy relating to the proposed restructure of HMP Isle of Wight
- Document the overall network design and implementation
- Develop and maintain an asset register to cover all onsite hardware
Key Requirements
- Setup of Servers
- Install and Configure Interactive Whiteboards
- Maintain and Configure up to 100 Desktop PC's and Laptops and up to 15 Servers
- Securely connect the remote class room to the main network.
- Setup Moodle Server and assist with implementation.
- Provide staff training where necessary.
Solution
- Installation of Firewall/Router and managed Switch to provide separate VLANs for each classroom and to isolate servers.
- Installation of Domain Controller configured with:
Active Directory.
Advanced Group Policy Security configuration.
Group Policy folder redirection for User Roaming Facility.
Mandatory Desktop and Start Menu for Inmates user accounts.
- Installation of Storage Server, also running as backup domain controller
- Installation of secondary domain controller in remote building to act as domain controller and DFS mirror if Point-to-Point link fails.
- Installation of Linux Server with Moodle Software.
- Installation of Point-to-Point Encrypted wireless link from Main Building to Remote Classroom.
- Installation of workstation imaging services to enable the speedy recovery of damaged or compromised computers.
- Customised Support contract to enable on-going support of systems.
- Structured Cat5e cabling to classrooms in secure blocks.
Outcome
As a result of the measures implemented by Navigate IT and Telecoms, The Isle of Wight Prison Services Education Department now enjoys a secure, state-of-the-art IT network.
Offenders can learn in a safe, secure and robust IT environment where they can gain access to “real world” applications and set their skills for a successful transition into becoming an active and valued member of society.
In part as a result of the work undertaken and the structure developed by Navigate IT and Telecoms, Sarah Snowdon of the Isle of Wight College was awarded the Learning and Skills improvement Service STAR award for innovation, a national award for excellence.
